Where words stop...

The land- and seascapes of my native Westcountry have always inspired me, along with the Scottish islands where I spend some time each year, and more recently France’s prehistoric caves.
Usually my medium is poetry, but I am increasingly finding that painting starts where words end. Sometimes the two work together: maybe a poem inspires me to paint; maybe a painting inspires me to write; sometimes my pieces incorporate or are accompanied by text.
I draw as much on imagination, feeling and memory as on the outer world.

I like to work in ways that convey an impression, atmosphere or feeling, and use acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolours, monoprint and collage. Several of my paintings use mixed media.
I have also worked a lot with visual artists, often on the land, and inevitably there are times when place, words and images merge. I like such thresholds. I'm a member of two westcountry art groups: Drawn to the Valley www.drawntothevalley.co.uk and Canzart www.canzart.co.uk

Cave paintings series: calling back the animals
Last year I spent some time in the Lot in Southwest France, and visited Pech Merle caves. I have a series of 5 semi-abstract paintings based on the cave paintings. These are a limited edition of 20 A2 signed prints on Somerset paper in archival pigment inks (colours are much richer in reality).
Mounted and framed they are approx. 90cm x 72cm; £295 complete
