Welcome to my website
At the hub of all my work is my belief in human potential, and the power of the human spirit in conjunction with creativity to renew, re-envision and regenerate itself. Alongside this is my own strong need to celebrate: this earth, its beings, the fact of being alive.
My own creative work primarily takes shape through words and images: my books and my paintings. (You'll find some examples here; I will be adding to these.) My novel IMAGO is due out this year.
Equally important, though, is the work I do with others, primarily in the fields of creative and reflective writing, but always with an undercurrent of soulwork and the evolution of consciousness. I believe passionately that our way forward as a species depends on our growth in terms of consciousness, and I've been privileged to work with many lovely people.
To this work I bring a lifetime spent in the meadows and seas of literature, especially poetry, art, psychology (I trained in transpersonal counselling), the exploration of philosophy, mysticism and the personal growth movement.
I am interested in what makes good writing. But I'm also interested in writing with soul and imagination, and in writing for personal development and as therapy. I don't see these things as mutually exclusive, although sometimes one focus will take precedence over the others. My courses will enhance your understanding of the tools and dynamics necessary to create work that is the best you can produce; and frequent feedback suggests that they also enhance your understanding of yourself and of the world.
I believe that the writing process is as much a passionate journey into inner space as it is about reaching an outer creative destination. A common theme running through all my work is a dialogue between inner and outer landscapes. I believe in the alchemical power of words to forge connection: to oneself, to each other, to the natural world, to creative consciousness and the human potential movement, and to the silence from which words grow... and if these things interest you too, then welcome, friend.
Thank you for visiting.
NEW: 'WRITING THE NOVELLA' COURSE
14 - 19 July, Exeter; non-residential. Contrary to popular belief, a novella is not merely a long short story or a short novel, but has its own particular qualities. If you like intense, and feel 15-40,000 words is more manageable than the 60-120,000 of the average novel, you might be interested. Click here for details Places are limited and this will be the only opportunity to work with me in depth on this exciting form of fiction (currently enjoying a revival with Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach). If you would like to provisionally book a place, you are advised to do so asap via my email contact.

URGENT: POLAR BEARS
http://www.wecansolveit.org/page/s/polarbears
14 May 2008 'Last week, more than 100,000 wecansolve it members helped to protect the polar bear by signing our petition. We've delivered this message to the Secretary of the Interior.' 'But there is still time to show your support.
In the next 2 days, the Secretary must decide if the polar bear will be protected under the Endangered Species Act. 'We'll be collecting signatures for the next 24 hours, hoping to increase support for this precious animal. Polar bears are tragic, innocent victims of global warming. Please sign our petition today to do your part for polar bears. Copy and paste into your browser the link above to add your name right now.' BEES Each month, I aim to post one of the many causes for concern, largely human-made, in relation to this beautiful planet and her inhabitants. This month, as a matter of urgency, I want to highlight bees (see also my blog). Apparently the US bee population has been almost halved in the last few years. Now, bee diseases are threatening to wipe out our own population of bees. As bees are a major factor in pollination, it doesn't take much thought to realise the implications of their loss (quite apart from that as a sadness in its own right). No pollination, no food crops. Bees may die out altogether within 10 years unless there's some research in the catastrophic bee diseases currently affecting the UK. Without bees, that'll mean no fruit, no vegetables, nuts etc. There is a petition on the Downing Street website calling on the PM to fund scientific research into maintaining UK bee stocks. It needs a lot more signatures. The address is http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/BeeResearch
